16 JOYCE, JAMES: Ulysses. Preface by Stephen James Joyce, Introduction by Jaques Aubert. With Etchings by Mimmo Paladino. Limited Leather Edition. Numbered. Cased.
London, Folio Society, 2004 Limited Numbered Edition
Hardback, Tall 8vo. 9.5 x 6.5 inches. In blue leather covers with gilt design by Jeff Clements. In hard case. In very good near fine condition. Some minor rubbing to rear side of slipcase and bottom edge. Else a very clean and tight copy. Numbered 1320/1750. ---- First published in France because of censorship troubles, the book takes place on one day in Dublin (June 16, 1904) and reflects the classic work of Homer. The main characters are Leopold Bloom, a Jewish advertising canvasser, his wife Molly, and Stephen Dedalus, the hero from Joyce's earlier novel Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. They are intended to be modern counterparts of Ulysses, Penelope and Telemachus. The story, using stream-of-consciousness technique, parallels the major events in Odysseus' journey home. The famous Sirens are barmaids. However, Bloom’s adventures are less heroic and his home coming less spectacular. The paths of Stephen and Bloom cross and recross through the day. Bloom makes his trip to the underworld by attending a funeral at Glasnevin. 735pp. With 18 etchings by Mimmo Paladino.
