Black endpapers. In very good condition. Covers slightly rubbed with rubbing to edges and corners. Some darkening and foxing to endpapers. Bookplates to endpapers “S.A. Walden.” “William Hooke, Abingdon” bookseller labels to rears. Hinges cracked on v.2. with glue repair. Occasional foxing spots to pages. Else very clean and tight copies. xxiv, 462, xiv 499pp. Vol I has 32 pp cat. With numerous maps, plans, photographs and illustrations. The River War: An Historical Account of the Reconquest of the Soudan is an 1899 book written by Winston Churchill while he was still an officer in the British army. This first edition copy was owned by Arthur Herbert Kerr and was lately owned by Andrew Kerr, who was the personal and literary assistant to Randolph S Churchill, involved in the research of the official biography of Winston, a founder of the Glastonbury Festival and who knew many famous people of the time including Jacquie Kennedy, John Betjamin and Jimi Hendrix. A rare and fascinating early work by Winston Churchill with an interesting, documented provenance.

It was simultaneously published in hard-back and in the limp cover edition (see above), both editions equally scarce. "The political significance of this little volume is that the subject matter and Churchill's own stance on the question of India largely contributed to his many years in the wilderness during the 1930's period of personal depression in his political fortunes, yet, curiously, a period of preparation, because by distancing himself from so many others, he then became acceptable to all as wartime Prime Minister" (BMC)
