Small nicks to ends of spines. Spines faded. Stamp “Estes & Lauriat, Boston” to edge of front endpaper, paperclip mark to front endpapers vol.1. Frontis plates loose and slightly darkend with chips to edges. Other coloured plates slightly darkened. Else inside pages all very clean and tight throughout. --- Interesting book of proverbs with amusing line drawings providing illustration. The drawings are on one side of the page only and have plain pages interspersed. A fascinating example of Victorian humour. 320 + 304pp. Illustrated with Twenty Coloured Etchings, and Two Hundred Woodcuts. by John Leech. Originally published in 1850, the books are a blend of amusement and instruction which serving up in as palatable a shape as possible, the ‘facts’ of English history. The author was a long term contributor to Punch.
